Dear Marc:
On behalf of the American Journalism Historians Association, it is my
distinctly pleasant duty to write to inform you that your
excellent dissertation, "Pacific Press: Vancouver’s Newspaper Monopoly,
1957-1991," has been judged to be the First-Place
Winner of the 2002 AJHA Doctoral Dissertation Prize.
In particular, the prize jury noted the originality of your argument,
the thoroughness of your research, and the clarity of your writing.
Moreover, the Award Committee firmly believes that it is the exceptional
quality of scholarship such as yours which clearly
advances the art of journalism and mass communication history.
We will also be notifying Prof. Pat Washburn, your dissertation director,
who no doubt will want to join us in our heartiest
congratulations.
We look forward to you joining us at the AJHA annual meeting in Nashville,
TN on October 3-5, 2002 for both the awarding
ceremony and a public panel presentation of your work. And with your
permission, the Award Committee would, for historical
archival purposes, like to retain the materials you were kind enough
to submit.
Please accept our best wishes for continued distinction in your scholarly
career.
Cordially,
David Abrahamson
Associate Professor of Journalism
